THE LEON PROJECT - RECORDING HISTORY

Welcome to the OFFICIAL BLOG of THE LEON PROJECT, a group consisting of brothers Jesús and Paco León, producers, pianists and composers.

Their music brings a fusion of ETHNIC – WORLD MUSIC elements, with electronic touches – “chill”, and with the piano as fundamental protagonist.

Their debut album, MALAGA MY LOVE, was a very international work where East meet West, where acoustic and electronic modalities interact, and where modern and traditional sensibilities co-habit in a fusion of Flamenco adornments and nuances, among which José Juan Pantoja’s Spanish guitar and Chandé’s voice (in the choruses and Flamenco harmonies) stand out.

MALAGA MY LOVE is full of soul-filled melodies; they are a collection of musical works written in homage to the roots of these two musicians and the musical experiences that they have been accumulating and ‘harvesting’ over the years. Two singles/videos were recently selected from this album and posted on our official website http://www.youtube.com/user/THELEONPROJECT ;“LIVING WITHOUT YOUR LOVE" (Jesús León, Paco León & Thomas Henry) with Thomas Henry as the invited artist, and “MALAGA MY LOVE” (Jesús León, Paco León & John Dawes), sung by Thomas Henry and Chandé.

Following MALAGA MY LOVE comes THE LEON PROJECT’S second album, CANVAS OF MIRACLES, totally VOCAL, with a distinct LOUNGE character and with underlying ethnic elements and electronic textures.As ever, the piano and keyboards are the common denominators on all the tracks. They represent a fresh way of appreciating the LOUNGE concept, with a fusion of ethnic (WORLD MUSIC) and electronic sounds, allied to more Spanish aspects, such as the Spanish guitar, the cajón and Flamenco harmonies…a combination that represents a hugely innovative proposition.

Another important reason why these themes stand out even more lies in the fact that they are all interpreted by female singers: Liona Gilad (who has already worked with THE LEON PROJECT in MALAGA MY LOVE), Blessing Odiase, La Negra Mayté and Charlotte Henry – ‘guests of honour’ for the occasion, all of them oozing sensuality, character and identity. The songs are sung in English, with Spanish segments by Chandé (who has also been with THE LEON PROJECT from the outset) who contributes his Flamenco touch. There are also segments sung in Edo and Igbo (Nigerian dialects) and Hebrew, sung by Blessing Odiase and Liona Gilad, respectively.

This album has a marked WORLD MUSIC flavour which is very easy to ‘digest’ and listen to (EASY LISTENING), free of stridency and with totally current and innovative artistic expressions full of sensory stimuli that invite calmness and relaxation…all with brilliant hooks. They are themes (which arise from LOUNGE instrumental bases) to close your eyes to and allow yourself to be carried away. They don’t, however, turn their back on musical richness and commerciality.

It is also worth highlighting the exceptional lyrical work of John Dawes (ever-present collaborator) who is responsible for giving concrete form to musical ideas, converting them into tremendously constructive, genuine and meaningful messages full of calmness and sensuality. The first single from CANVAS OF MIRACLES © 2011 is “LOUNGE STATE OF MIND” (Jesús León, Paco León & John Dawes) whose video has been recently launched on the official website on Youtube . It is sung by La Negra Mayté (solo vocals) and Chandé (final choruses).

El videoclip fue filmado en los BAÑOS ARABES y el PALACIO DE MONDRAGON, ambas localizaciones de RONDA.

Así, este video se filmó en estos dos lugares extraordinarios:

· Los BAÑOS ARABES, siglos XIII-XIV d.C ; este recinto termal de época musulmana es el mejor conservado de la Península Ibérica. Se localiza en el Antiguo Arrabal Islámico de la Ciudad, actualmente denominado Barrio de San Miguel en el extrarradio de lo que fue en su momento la Medina Musulmana de Ronda.

· Y el PALACIO DE MONDRAGON, conocido también como Palacio del Marqués de Villasierra, constituye un magnifico bien arquitectónico, sin duda el monumento civil más significativo de Ronda. Dice la leyenda que fue residencia del gran rey Abbel Malik o Abomelic, hijo del sultán de Marruecos Abul Asan. A los pocos años de la muerte de Abomelic, el reino de Ronda pasó a depender del de Granada, sabiendo que el último gobernador musulmán Hamet el Zegrí también residió en este palacio.

Ambas localizaciones, confieren a este video el carácter ARTISTICO HISTORICO, que hacen de cada imagen una verdadera obra de arte; una joya visual, para perderse en ella; un marco incomparable donde esta canción, LOUNGE STATE OF MIND, escrita por Jesús León, Paco León y John Dawes, brilla con luz propia; una música que hace despertar a los sentidos… y que THE LEON PROJECT nos presenta.

LOUNGE STATE OF MIND is sung by LA NEGRA MAYTÉ (solo vocals) with the end choruses sung by CHANDÉ, giving the number a ‘Flamenco colour’. In this song, we enter the LOUNGE universe of electronic sounds, with acoustic aspects centred on WORLD MUSIC…along with Spanish touches, with elements such as the cajón and the Spanish guitar, which the LEON brothers have now accustomed us to in their previous productions.

The video was filmed in the ARAB BATHS and the MONDRAGON PALACE, both located in RONDA, a Spanish municipality within the autonomous community (region) of Andalucía. Ronda is situated in the northeast of the Province of Málaga and is the capital of the district of the Serranía de Ronda. It is the second most populated municipality of the interior of the Province, after Antequera, its municipal boundary extending over a ‘meseta’ (plateau), known as the Ronda Depression, and over the ‘sierras’ (mountains) which surround it.

Ronda’s origins lie in the Roman Arunda, which was built on existing Iberian settlements. The Visigoths held it until the arrival of the Muslims (Mussulmans), who consolidated its urban entity and its standing as the district capital.

This video was filmed in these two extraordinary locations:

•The ARAB (MOORISH) BATHS, XIII-XIV centuries A.D.: this thermal precinct from the Mussulman epoch is the best-preserved in the whole Iberian Peninsula. It is located within the ancient Islamic suburb of the city currently known as the Barrio de San Miguel in the outskirts of what was, in its day, the Mussulman Medina of Ronda.

•MONDRAGON PALACE, also known as the Palace of the Marquis of Villasierra, constitutes a magnificent architectural property, which, without doubt, is the most significant civil monument in Ronda. Legend says that it was the residence of the great king Abbel Malik, or Abomelic, son of the Sultan of Morocco, Abul Asan. A few years after Abomelic’s death, the kingdom went on to depend on that of Granada. It is known that the last Muslim governor of Ronda, Hamet el Zegrí, also lived in this palace.

Both locations give this video its HISTORICAL ARTISTIC character, which makes each image a veritable work of art – a visual jewel to lose oneself in. They provide an incomparable frame within which this song, LOUNGE STATE OF MIND, written by Jesús León, Paco Léon and John Dawes, shines with its own light…music that awakens the senses…and that THE LEON PROJECT bring to us. RONDA opens its arms to the music of the León brothers.
